The week passed by uneventfully. I showed up for class, avoided the massive clouds of cigarette smoke outside by staying in for every break, and hung around after school until I was sure everyone had left so no one would hear my backup beeper. It didnât take too long; the students at Banting never lingered after class. Eric stayed away from me, and I sat beside Cara every day. She was really growing on me. She was full of confidence, the kind of girl who assumed that everyone wanted to be her friend. She was exactly the type of person I needed around.
The only exception to my hiding out in the classroom was my annoyingly small bladder forcing me to take regular bathroom breaks. You didnât have to ask to go pee at Banting, which was a welcome change. The first time I asked LA to be excused she just stared at me, rolled her eyes, and went on a diatribe against the idiocy of traditional high schools and their antiquated bathroom rules.
It was Friday morning and I had a job interview at Brew before school, so I was up extra early. I grabbed my school stuff, hopped in the car, and ten minutes later I pulled into Brewâs parking lot. I checked my makeup quickly in the mirror and once satisfied, I went inside for my interview. I was meeting with Sara something or other. As I approached the counter, there was only one person working.
âHi, are you Sara?â I asked nervously.
âYes, maâam. Are you Olivia?â
âI sure am!â I responded enthusiastically. It definitely didnât feel natural to sound so peppy, but I really wanted the job and it was hard to get hired with a standoffish demeanor. A line was forming quickly, and I stood out of the way.
âSorry, Olivia,â she said while she expertly grabbed coffees and made cappuccinos. âSomeone was supposed to come in to help me this morning but heâs late,â she said with a slight frown.
âOh, no worries at all. Is there anything I can do to help?â I didnât actually think Iâd be much help, but it felt rude not to at least offer.
âBless you, sweet thing. Just give me five minutes, and Iâm sure we can do a quick interview.â
I nodded and took a seat out of the way.
Sara seemed nice. She was a good ten years older than I, and was clearly very experienced in the industry. She had blonde hair and bright blue eyes. After a few minutes, a nerdy-looking guy with glasses and a baseball cap ran into the store and immediately walked behind the counter, tying his apron as he went.
âYouâre late,â Sara said tersely through her teeth while she continued smiling at the customer she was serving.
âI know, I know. Iâm sorry.â
She gave him a light punch in the arm and let him take over. Coming my way, she sat down across from me.
âSorry, hon. So, have you ever worked before?â she asked, eyeing me suspiciously.
âWell, no not exactly.
